Ross Bolden's Birdsville motorhome parked at a campsite, awning out, perfectly level on ramps
📍 Somewhere beautiful in Australia The Birdsville. Awning out. Those red ramps under the front wheel — placed first time, right height, no second guessing. That's what OzLevel is for.

The story

I built the app I wished existed

I was at a campsite, getting in and out a dozen times, shifting ramps, getting it wrong. I thought — there has to be a better way. There wasn't. So I built OzLevel.

I'm a motorhome owner. I know the routine: pull in, put a spirit level on the bench, guess at the ramp height, drive forward, check again, reverse, adjust, repeat. Twenty minutes gone before the awning's even out.

The fix seemed obvious — measure your lean before you touch a ramp, calculate the exact block count, place them right, drive on once. A phone already has the sensors to do this. Nobody had built the app to actually do it properly for Australian ramp systems. So I did.

Background

Why the engineering is sound

🎓 UTS Mechanical Engineering 🔧 40+ Years Engineering & Software 💻 Enterprise Software Executive 🚐 Motorhome Owner 🇦🇺 Made in Australia

My background is mechanical engineering — UTS, class of 1981 — combined with 40+ years across manufacturing, logistics, and enterprise software. That combination matters for OzLevel: I understood both the physics of vehicle levelling and how to build reliable software around it before writing a single line of code.

The ±0.5° accuracy claim isn't marketing. A modern phone accelerometer samples gravity at high frequency; converting lean angle to ramp block count is straightforward geometry. OzLevel does that calculation correctly, accounts for your specific vehicle track width and ramp step height, and gives you the answer in seconds.

OzLevel is a one-person operation. I design it, build it, support it, and use it on my own rig. When something doesn't work properly, I hear about it — and I fix it.

Career background

Why the engineering is credible

OzLevel isn't a hobbyist side project. It was built by someone who spent four decades optimising complex systems — first in mechanical engineering, then logistics, then enterprise software — before retiring and deciding to solve a problem he encountered every time he pulled into a campsite.

1976 – 1993
Mechanical Engineer → Logistics Manager
Joy Manufacturing · Taubmans · Ampol

Started as a cadet engineer — field service, boilermaking, drafting, design — before moving into production line engineering and logistics leadership. At Ampol, led a five-year transformation that moved the business from the most expensive lubricant blender in Australia to the least expensive, through ERP implementation, plant rationalisation, and process optimisation.

1993 – 2020
Sales Executive → Country Manager → VP Sales APAC
SSA · Manugistics · i2 Technologies · PeopleSoft · SAP · SumTotal · NCR

Twenty-plus years selling and implementing supply chain optimisation software to large enterprises across Australia and the Asia-Pacific. Final role at NCR managing the Woolworths account — A$100M annually — alongside regional market expansion. The through-line across every role: helping organisations use technology to make their operations work better, faster, and cheaper.

2023 –
Founder & Developer
OzLevel

Built OzLevel after one too many twenty-minute ramp shuffles. The sensor accuracy, the ramp block maths, the jockey wheel calculations — all engineering problems with clean solutions. The software wrapping them is a hobbyist project. The physics underneath it is not.

The apps

Two apps. One problem solved.

OzLevel covers both motorhomes and caravans — each with a workflow tailored to how that vehicle is actually levelled. The motorhome app handles drive-on ramps. The caravan app adds jockey wheel pitch correction in millimetres, solo levelling workflow, and the unhitch sequence.

Both are free to try. The Pro upgrade is a one-time $9.99 AUD — no subscription, no recurring charges, works offline at any campsite.
